Chapter 8

Pulling into my driveway, I eased off the bike, yeah. I got the second wind, which helped me get home, but that second wind didn't do much for my screaming muscles. As I walked in through the connecting door from the internal garage, my knees sagged, barely able to hold me up. Every tendon and every fiber of my body ached. I yearned for a boiling hot bath and something to drink.

I heard the knock on the door; it roused me from my sleep, the water cold now, and the light was long since gone. "Max." I heard her call my name, then again, with more urgency.

I breathed softly, enjoying the cold icy embrace of the water.

Three more cries before the silence cloaked me, a little splat, as water dripped from the tap. Draining some water, I filled the bath again, the steaming water bringing some life to my tired body.

I stayed long enough to feel my body temperature return to normal, my skin now a pale pink. The bed, thankfully, was cozy and warm, but it couldn't stop my thoughts and Darcy's face from filling my mind. Was I wrong?

It was a late start for me, and I ambled around the house feeling drained. What a fool I was. That bloody ride, I would be paying for that all week. I hung out my laundry, folded the sheets, and ran the vacuum around the house. I was bent over, rolling up the cord, when I heard "Hello, Auntie."

Seeing the tense cute little face brightened my day. "Hello to you, baby doll. How are you this morning?"

Her face brightened, hearing me use her nickname. "I'm good; Mummy said to tell you to come over for lunch. We're having hot dogs."

I knelt down and pulled her into my arms. "Sorry, cutie, but I have stuff to do. Maybe another day, okay?"

The pouty little show of disdain showed her real feelings. "I thought you liked hot dogs?"

"I do, baby doll, but I'm busy. Got to get stuff ready for your class tomorrow, and I have to shop."

At the mention of the word shop, she clapped her hands. "Could I come?"

"Of course, but I thought you were having your favorite?"

"We could go shopping after?"

I laughed softly at her outmaneuvering me. "Okay, if mummy says it's okay, then after lunch, you come back, and we could go together."

She scampered off at full speed. Such a cutie and impossible to be mad at.

She eventually returned dressed in fresh, clean clothes and carrying a bag full of hot dogs. "Mummy said she didn't want you to miss out."

I hugged her and said, "Thank you."

We had a little girl's day. Trudged around the mall, which included an hour-long expedition in the toy section, which my purse would still be recovering from days later, then the clothes stores, and another credit card bruising experience. God, she was impossible to say no to. I didn't know how Lily did it. She seemed to have no problems saying no. I, on the other hand, just couldn't.
